Programming procedures
What the job needs
- Add a key: 1 existing working key required.
- All keys lost: no existing working key needed.
- PIN / security code: See risks for PIN source.
- Online / server access: not required (offline programming).
- On-board (no tool) sequence: possible for this case.
- On site: engine off · n/a.
- Bring: Photo ID + vehicle registration. VIN for code-cut if no working key.

Notes & cautions
- This chassis spans TWO generations with different key configurations: 1st gen DC (2001-2005, vi=0) — pure MECHANICAL key only (KK3 blade), no remote, no transponder, no electronics. 2nd gen JB (2006-2011, vi=1/2) — MECHANICAL ignition key (HY16-P blade) + separate REMOTE FOB for keyless entry (PLNHM-T002 OR PINHA-T036 depending on production year). NO transponder on either generation NA-spec. Verify trim before quoting — DC and JB use DIFFERENT blade profiles (KK3 vs HY16-P).
- Production-mid-cycle FCC change on 2nd gen JB: 2006-mid-2009 = PLNHM-T002; mid-2009-2011 = PINHA-T036. Both are 315 MHz 3-button (Lock/Unlock/Panic — no trunk button on hatch). Verify chip before — visually inspect existing remote for FCC label printed on back.
- NO transponder IMMO on this variant (either generation). Mechanical ignition key requires only the bitting code — no electronics programming. 2010-2011 Canada-spec Rio JB had a separate transponder ignition key (HY20-PT / ID46) — NOT covered by this case (separate variant).
- AKL on this chassis depends on generation: DC (2001-2005) = pure mechanical AKL (pick / impression / decode the wafer cylinder); JB (2006-2011) = mechanical AKL + electronic remote-AKL via aftermarket OBD tool.
- Bring minimum 2 mechanical blanks per generation: DC = KK3 (Ilco X253 or equivalent); JB = HY16-P. For JB remote AKL: minimum 2 new remotes (PLNHM-T002 for 2006-2009 OR PINHA-T036 for 2010-2011). Verify trim before quoting AKL — DC and JB AKL have completely different tool requirements.
- NO transponder on this variant either generation = no risk of bricking electronics. NO NASTF VSP required (pre-2020 PIN-free era for this chassis). Mechanical-cylinder failure modes only.
Lockout
